Sadie the giraffe doesn’t feel well. Her throat is sore and her tummy hurts. And when her mom takes her temperature, she has a fever of 102F. It’s time for Sadie to visit Dr. Hippo to see what’s the matter. Dr. Hippo takes a throat culture, diagnoses the problem, and Sadie is soon all better. She even gets to go to the fair.

Sadie’s Sore Throat is part of the Dr. Hippo series, designed to explain illnesses to children so they understand what’s happening to their bodies. This book shows us the stages of Sadie’s illness, her visit with the doctor, and how she gets well once she takes her medicine.

In addition to the story, a guide for parents is included, which explains what to look for when a child has a sore throat, and how to handle it. I highly recommend this cute and informative story for all families with young children.

Most people don’t want to look very closely at their painful pasts. But they probably don’t realize those memories are still hurting them physically. In Truth Heals, author Deborah King explores how these experiences affect our energy centers and shows us how we can reverse their effects.

Focusing on each chakra (energy center), King shares some of her own childhood traumas and those of her clients. She explains how these might affect a person’s health and emotional state today. Then she provides some thoughts on letting go in order to heal.

The reader doesn’t need to be familiar with chakras in order to benefit from this book. King explains what they are, along with the kinds of illnesses that manifest in each. She encourages those being treated for a specific illness to continue to work with their medical practitioners, while also integrating some emotional work to help the body let go of disease.

Practical, helpful and uplifting, Truth Heals is a reminder that we are all that we put into our bodies – including our thoughts. Since we can change our thinking, we can also help reverse disease in our bodies. Anyone who wants to improve their health will find this book helpful in making positive changes.

Size 2 For Life

As a culture that’s become obsessed with weight management, we continue to seek out new and improved methods of shedding unwanted pounds. Size 2 For Life offers a diet and exercise plan which is designed to bring women back to their “frame-adjusted size 2” figures.

At the introduction to this book, the authors address unhealthy weight loss methods and a dangerous increase in anorexic and bulimic behaviors. Yet this very title is one that leaves me feeling uncomfortable. Most women would probably be a very healthy size 6 or 8. Size 2 feels like an unattainable and dangerous goal to me.

The 21-day eating plan also disturbs me. It is made up of mostly steamed vegetables, egg whites, chicken and turkey. There is almost no fat and very few carbs. We may be a culture who eats too many of these foods, but healthy fats and carbs are a necessity in our diets. The program also assumes the reader can understand the authors’ lingo. One item on the plan is a “protein smoothie.” This item is not explained beforehand, so the reader would have no idea what would go into one.

The main focus of the exercise program is aerobic movement and muscle toning. Since there is considerable toning of the legs in dance or other aerobic activities, the authors recommend only upper body toning. Some exercises are provided, but they suggest following the circuit at your local gym. While this may be simple, it assumes that the circuit has been properly designed for a total upper body workout.

Once the size 2 figure has been achieved, a maintenance diet and exercise program is recommended. Several chain restaurant foods are analyzed for the best choices to make when dining out.

Overall, I was not impressed with this book. I felt the diet could have been explained in terms of allowable foods that one could pick and choose from, rather than a specific plan one had to follow each day. The diet is bland, and shows no imagination in creating tasty and healthy meals that won’t feel like deprivation eating. Weighing in twice every day as recommended would create unnecessary emotional stress when body fluctuations show weight shifts. The strongest feature of this book is the recommended exercise, which is a basic strength training and aerobic program.

If you’re looking for a sensible weight-loss and exercise program, I’d suggest Body For Life, which I feel is still probably the best book on the market.

Miles Moose is excited about his upcoming camping trip with his dad. But then his tummy starts to act funny, with some very unpleasant results. Looks like he’ll be waiting a few days to take his trip so his tummy can get better.

Although the title of this book may cause a few heads to turn, The Moose With Loose Poops was written to help explain gastroenteritis to kids. The first time they experience vomiting or diarrhea, they may become worried. Dr. Cowan wanted to reassure them that this is perfectly normal but uncomfortable tummy behavior when they’re sick. Penelope Neal has created cute illustrations showing us how Miles handles his illness.

The author also includes a guide to gastroenteritis for parents, who may be even more concerned than their kids. It explains home treatment and when to call a doctor if symptoms seem to be getting worse. I highly recommend this cute and informative story for all families with young children.

Instead, she determined to take the message of health and fitness to her community in an effort to help as many people as she could.  This “meltdown,” as it became known, spread like wildfire, and information is provided on starting your own community group.

If you or a loved one have ever had an extended hospital stay or been treated for a long-standing illness, you’ve likely run into problems in the medical establishment. Author Dr. Julia A. Hallisy has experienced many of these incidents in the ten-year treatment of her daughter’s cancer, and she shares the wisdom she acquired in The Empowered Patient.

The first step in becoming a savvy medical consumer is knowing who you’re talking to. Therefore, she begins by introducing all the titles of the various personnel you’re likely to encounter in a hospital, along with their roles and responsibilities.

those who are ill are more susceptible to infection, so one chapter is devoted to prevention of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections. Along with the precautions family and hospital staff can take, reporting infections to the right hospital personnel can help prevent future problems. Although much of this information was helpful, as a “green” reviewer, I was disturbed by the author’s insistence that only toxic and harmful chemical disinfectants should be used. If I were a patient, I would not find the spraying of toxic fumes around me to be helpful in my recovery.

Errors occur more frequently than most of us would feel comfortable with, so the patient and family members need to be extra vigilant in making sure all care received is appropriate. Second opinions are encouraged for diagnoses and treatment options, to be sure the patient is comfortable with the procedure he’s signed on for.

Hospital paperwork can be daunting, so the author explains exactly what a consent form allows the hospital to do, and how you can be sure your needs are met. And if you need to see or even alter your medical records, she explains the procedure to handle your request.

Dr. Julia A. Hallisy was able to help others navigate the medical scene during the time she cared for her daughter, and now she’s sharing her acquired knowledge with the rest of us in The Empowered Patient. Reading this well-written and well-researched book before you face a crisis will surely prepare you to get through one as smoothly as possible.

A mom has so much to juggle each day that her own self-care is often the last thing she thinks about. But can a mom be effective taking care of others if she hasn’t met her own basic needs? Debi Silber doesn’t think so, and that’s why she’s created The Lifestyle Fitness Program to guide moms in looking, feeling and living their best.

This guidebook is divided into six sections: Nutrition, Fitness, Relationships, Emotions, Spirituality, and Stress Control. Each section is then further divided into chapter sub-topics, with goals set for each chapter. The author encourages moms to set only one goal per week, with the intent to create new healthy habits as these small changes become part of their lives.

Silber has a light and breezy style of chatting with the reader, almost as if she’s in a personal coaching session in her role as the “Mojo Coach.” But because she covers so much material in such a short book, the individual chapters don’t go into any real depth. Instead, they’re more motivational than informational. The author also provides an on-line forum at her website for readers to discuss the challenges and successes they’ve had in working this program.

If you’re looking for bite-sized chunks of information that will help you make small incremental changes that will lead to a happier and healthier life, you’ll find the guidance in The Lifestyle Fitness Program a valuable resource.

If you’re a firm believer in modern-day medicine and have no interest in taking care of your own body, then this book is not for you. But many people today are beginning to question the ability of their physicians to treat their whole body rather than just a set of symptoms, and they’re looking for ways to take their health care into their own hands.

Rayna M. Gangi, a holistic healer with native American roots, begins this volume by providing considerable evidence that today’s children are suffering much greater health risks than those of several decades ago, with the increase in vaccinations and behavior modification drugs. Chemicals in common household products and in the water they drink expose them to numerable toxins. And their diets are suffering due to soft drinks, sugary products and artificial sweeteners and colors.

She also explores the over-vaccination of pets and the poor quality of most pet foods. While the author doesn’t mention the food poisoning which recently devastated many pet owners, that incident certainly does make one question what our pets are really eating.

As the circle implies, our journey begins with childhood, and this book wouldn’t be complete unless it traveled the full arc into aging and death. The author touches on the concept of living life in circle, and living in harmony with the earth and its cycles. In a well-written and well-documented book, she shows us where we can make changes in our lives, so we can experience better health and happiness.

Rayna M. Gangi writes with warmth and compassion. She encourages us to ask questions, and to notice how our bodies feel when we bombard them with chemicals and mistreat them. Ultimately, she sees a world where we all respect our bodies, our environment, and each other.

If you’ve just had major surgery or gone through cancer treatments, you probably now find yourself in the Healing Zone. Your primary goal is to heal your body as quickly and easily as possible. Super Healing can help.

Dr. Silver, a physiatrist (doctor specializing in rehabilitation medicine), will help you put together your own Super Healing plan, incorporating eight healing strategies designed to maximize healing.

Physical goals include getting proper exercise and not tiring your body unnecessarily with chores that drain you but don’t contribute to healing. They also include getting proper nutrition, especially those foods that specifically heal whatever problem you’re currently facing.

Proper rest is also important, and working with your doctor to alleviate pain will help to ensure you can get at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

In addition to caring for your body, proper mental and emotional care is important. While Dr. Silver understands it’s not always easy to keep a positive mental attitude when you’re not feeling well, there are certain steps you can take to try not to let yourself get too down.

Getting appropriate emotional needs met by the people around you can help, also. So can connecting to your spiritual needs, whatever your faith.

When all of these elements are brought together into a plan, comprised of short and long term goals, healing is accelerated. Dr. Silver has used this plan with many of her patients and also for herself, as a cancer survivor. If you follow it, she assures you that you’ll have an easier trip through the Healing Zone.
