This latest Graphic Classics volume features westerns. It contains a nice mix of stories, from the comical Knife River Prodigal, to the drama of Riders of the Purple Sage, the Native American The Last Thundersong, and even some Spanish influence in The Right Eye of the Commander and La Perdida.

Each of the artists portrays the stories in their own unique manner. Some choose a more realistic approach, while others use a comic-book style, all perfectly suited to the stories they illustrate.

These Graphic Classics books allow us to read classic literature that we may never have been exposed to be before. I know very little about the western genre, yet I enjoyed reading this compilation of adapted works. If you enjoy westerns, this volume would be a wonderful addition to your collection.

Piggy behavior is all around us. Talking loudly on cell phones, failing to clean up after our pets, and littering all make life unpleasant for others. So when Sammy’s dad offers to let him ride along as he tickets these folks, Sammy is happy to join him.

Only trouble is, sometimes it’s hard not to be a piggy when you’re pointing out piggy behavior in others. Sammy witnesses some very piggy behavior, but he’s surprised to find out who’s the biggest piggy offender.

Poking fun in a light-hearted manner, Piggy Nation gets the point across. Kids will chuckle as Piggy Dad slaps Piggy Tickets on everyone, while making his own messes as he goes along. And then they’ll be able to point out for themselves, “That’s piggy behavior!”

Jenna and Caleb are told not to go into Uncle Al’s desk, but when they find it unlocked, they can’t resist nosing around. Uncle Al is studying the Missoula Floods, which took place during the ice age. An interactive map and travel journal offer them an unexpected opportunity to travel back in time to see it in person.

With Ari, who joins them the next day, they make the journey back to the ice age, and immediately face a preshistoric beast intent on devouring them for dinner. But a friendly thunderbird answers their call for help, and offers them taxi service. As they fly over the area, they see many extinct animals, as well as the effects of the flooding. An ice explosion, waterfalls, and whirlpools are just some of the unique sights they see.

The ice age isn’t something most people know much about, yet this time in earth’s history contributed the most to our modern-day landscape. Terra Tempo explores this era in an interesting and informative way that kids will enjoy. Time travel, adventure and the graphic novel format of this book make it an easy and fun read.

Two Little Savages: The Adventures of Two Boys Who Lived as American Indians

Most boys have dreamed about spending a week or two camping out, surviving on what they can forage. If they’re fortunate enough to live near the woods, and they have indulgent parents, they may be able to live out their fantasy. But if they’re city dwellers, they may have to read about it instead.

Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946), who founded the Boy Scouts of America, penned this work sharing the adventures of two boys who experienced their dream of living as Native Americans for three weeks. In it, they build a teepee shelter, hunt, learn about the animals around them, and solidify their friendship.

Yan and Sam try to do everything the way the Native Americans would do it. Teepee construction, making their own arrows, and crafting a drum are all done as authentically as possible. With no Native people around to help, they rely on Caleb, a man who seems to know quite a bit about their methods.

Boys probably would not be too upset by animals being killed in this story, but the more sensitive might be turned off. Some of the animal antics don’t ring quite true, and it seems as if the author used some exaggeration to create more drama. But overall, this is a great read for all boys who crave outdoor adventures.

Everyone has made a New Year’s resolution at one time or another. But usually by the middle of January, our goal has been forgotten, as we run into problems maintaining our willpower. If we really want to achieve this goal, we will want to press on, but if it’s not that important to us, we may let it go until the new year rolls around again.

In this Skinny, Jim Randel explains how we can develop our willpower and learn to stay the course, even when the going gets rough. Using the fictional stick-couple, Billy and Beth, he shows us how these folks make a decision to do something, and then proceed to achieve it.

If we never ran into roadblocks, we wouldn’t need willpower. Both Billy and Beth have to overcome obstacles of fear, inertia, doing too much too quickly, and deciding how important their goals are to them. Randel provides a 15-point plan to improve willpower and self-discipline, as we work toward our own goals. And a helpful bibliography of additional works on this subject is also provided. Once again, Randel has presented a wealth of information in a quick and fun read that can guide us for a lifetime.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be one of the scariest moments in a person’s life. The choices seem limited, and big decisions must be made before having a chance to really think things through. Conventional treatments or alternative? And what really works?

In Embrace Release Heal, author Leigh Fortson describes her own journey with cancer. After her third cancer diagnosis, she is given a hopeless prognosis, and is determined to save herself while also educating others through this book. Cancer survivors are all around, and Fortson finds them and shares their stories with us.

Although she chose the path of traditional medicine for her first two rounds, by the third round, Fortson no longer wanted to subject her body to the harsh treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. Instead, she chose to honor her body’s own wisdom and try to heal herself in a more natural way.

Ultimately each person needs to determine what course of action to take, but it’s easier to make a decision when all the options are before us. While some traditional options are explored in this book, its focus is on those treatments we may not know about – treatment programs that have an astonishing success rate, but doctors are unable to recommend them.

Cancer doesn’t have to be the end – it can also be a beginning. When we realize what we’ve been doing that contributed to the cancer, we can start to live life from a new perspective. And even if we aren’t able to cure the cancer, we can life our lives to the fullest while we’re able. I highly recommend Embrace Release Heal for anyone suffering with a cancer diagnosis.

In this sequel to I’m Having Twins, Paris tells of the twins’ birth. Her mom and the babies need to stay at the hospital for a little while, but she is excited to see them.

Grandmas and Grandpas visit, people bring gifts, and dad tries to cook. It’s a time of great celebration. Finally everyone gets to leave the hospital, and the whole family is home together.

Although not as good as the first book in this series, My Twins Are Coming Home is a child’s eye view of what it’s like when mother has twins. Anyone who has ever experienced this will be able to relate to Paris and her actions as life changes around her.

author interview

Author Interview: Joanne Lécuyer

Bergers Book Reviews offers a warm welcome to Joanne Lécuyer, who has stopped in today for a chat:

Q – What was the inspiration for The Witch, the Cat and the Egg?
A – I’ve always loved magic, wizards, witches and dragons. I’m not quite sure why – I guess because they are “magical” and with magic anything is possible. Juliane, the witch, is a mixture of many female characters that I loved in books and Disney movies. She’s happy, kind, loves to help others and is friends with all the magical creatures of the forest. When I was a young girl, I wished that I could talk to animals. I still do!

Q – Which character is your favorite and why?
A – That’s a really tough question. I like all the characters in the book. If I had to pick only one, I’d have to say Magicus, since I named him after my own black cat Black Magic. My cat Magic is very timid, so I made Magicus more confident and adventurous.

Q – Juliane believes it’s important to care for the creatures of the forest and the environment. How is this reflected in your own life?
A – I love animals. If I didn’t have allergies, I probably would have lived on a farm. I also love walking in the woods. We have a small forest behind our house (we live in the country). It’s a place where I go to meditate. It’s my magical place.

Q – Magicus the cat is one of Juliane’s companions. Do you share your home with any special animals?
A – Yes I do. I have two cats – Black Magic and a grey cat named Minx, as well as a dog named Kato. You can see pictures of them on my website at www.topysbooks.com under “About us/About the Author.”

Q – What is the message you’d like kids to take away from reading this book?
A – My motto is “Dare to imagine and believe in the magic of possibilities!” I want kids to believe that anything is possible. Even when they think they might not be able to do something, they should always feel that they can call on friends and family to help.

Q – Do you have any other books coming?
A – My second book is Kaptain Vamp. I thought it would be fun to write a story about vampires for kids. It was a bit of a challenge to take this theme and make it positive. I’m very happy with the results, and my test readers like it.

The book is about a young vampire named Allistaire, who is also part human, who wants to change the fact that humans are afraid and distrustful of vampires. His family has been living among humans for hundreds of years and they’ve always used their abilities for good. One day, while reading his favourite superhero comic, Allistaire decides that he’s going to do everything he can to help humans. He enlists the aid of his best friend Rich to help him become Kaptain Vamp. The illustrator, Amy Rottinger, is finishing up the images. I’m aiming to have the book out as an Ebook in July or August and in print by September. There will be sequels to The Witch, the Cat and the Egg and Kaptain Vamp next year.

Q – Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
A – When I started writing stories for children, I decided that I would write the kinds of books that leave my readers feeling good and wanting more; that also leave them with a smile on their faces. They are the type of books that you can read to kids before they go to bed that will help them have good dreams!

An Ebook and audio version of the Witch book will be released in June 2011. Kids can download images from the book to color and learn words taken from the book in 5 different languages. Check out the “Fun Stuff” tab on the website.

I hope that new readers will make Topsy Books part of their reading collection.

Thanks for reading.
